A wave is a disturbance travelling through a medium.

You already learnt a wave can be classified into two types - Longitudinal and Transverse wave.

Let us see the general characteristics of a sound wave :

(1) Sound wave propagates through a medium.

(2) Sound wave propagate with different speeds in different mediums.

(3) Sound wave is longitudinal.

(4) Sound wave has two portions - compression and rarefaction.

(5) Sound wave directly results with periodic vibration of medium particles about their mean position.

(6) A sound wave have a definite length, which is often called as "WAVELENGTH".
