Let me give you an example. During the Cold War two powerful nations divided the world in to 2 groups. On one side American and on other side Russia.
Bipolarity is an international system. It is said that bipolarity reduces international violence. So let us take a look at its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of Bipolarity:
1) Expansion is not easy. Whatever happens in the world, the 2 nations solve the matter. Both American and Russia are concerned to whatever happens in different regions of the world. This leads to reduction in tension among different nations
2) Peace is maintained. The 2 nations only are in the competition , whether it is in field of science, art, defence , the 2 nations compete with each other even in minor matters.
3) For every action there will be an equal and opposite reaction. The 2 nations wage small wars against each other. If one nation doesn't wage war this means it is ignoring it's own interests and other nations interests who are supporting them. So there is a balance of power in the world.
4) Changes do not affect the 2 nations. The America and Russia were so powerful that it didn't matter when they lost any war. They continued to dominate and powerful

Now let's discuss some of the disadvantages:
1) It increases chances of expansion. Well you will wonder that I had written that expansion is difficult but let me be clear the desire of expansion is even more greater. If America increased its strategy then Russia will automatically desire to expand its resources to counter America's moves. It is a negative factor as Third world countries that are now called developing countries will suffer.
2) Unnecessary confusion arises. If America gains a nation it will be not at the cost of Soviet Union. But then also the 2 nations fight.
3) Calculated risk. The nation tries to avoid a war only when it faces an immediate prospectus of war. It gets difficult. If Russia wants to fight with fire then America without calculating risks fight with fire. This policy is not good
