Pros:

You enter the elite class of society who has the privilege of wearing a robe in the Court.

You are known as “Vakil Sahib” or “Judge Sahib” in society.

You are looked on with expectation and respect by non-legals in society as they expect you are the one who is well aware of the working of the “system”.

You are the one whom police will not put its hands on in the first run. “Advocate” tag is enough to scare away/keep away the police in small matters.

If you are not pressed for litigating in Court of Law, you can engage yourself with renowned law firms of the nation and earn decent packages.

Cons:
If you did not notice, let me tell you the pros above are mostly based on how non-legals have a perception of lawyers. Thus most of these pros because of the way Indian society tuned in. However now I will also point out some bare facts about legal profession

If after pursuing law you want to go for advocacy, let me tell you, advocacy is one of those professions where new comers are the least welcome. Your merit is of secondary value. If you did not get birth into a family with generations (or at least one generation) of well-off lawyers or judges, chances are that it will take you years, if not ages, to earn a decent living to make your both ends meet. (This of-course will find exceptions, but name one great lawyer you remember name of and then look at his family tree…you will find a legal history.)

As society expects a lawyer to be well-versed with every aspect of law, it is next to impossible for even the very senior lawyers. There are over 1000 Central Laws and including the State laws the total number could jump to between 30–40,000. No lawyer could be expected to know all these. However a practicing lawyer would be probably have a knowledge of many of general substantive laws like Criminal Laws, Property Laws, Constitutional Law, Writ Cases etc. and most procedural laws like CrPC, CPC etc.

Talking of association with law firms, the 10+ packages as common in certain other disciplines are for the most illustrious ones in legal professions. Only the top most few firms of the country go on to providing 10+ packages and 15+ ones are ever rare

Other opportunities in Law:

Apart from firms, advocates and judges, one can also apply for post of law officers in different corporations, banks etc and there packages vary from 4 lacs to 12–15 lacs (higher numbers rare though, generally offered by only few PSUs)

You can also become an Assistant professor in a Law University/College for which the renowned ones pay well.

A general remark: Being a law student may not always earn you the heaviest pay packages, but it does give you a general personality build up and interactive confidence, because..YES! you are the one who has the best knowledge of the working of the ‘system’ amongst the unwary ones! :) .
So if you develop an interest in Law, do go for it. You will be the one in black and white and if you push yourself quite enough, you will do well and earn well.
