Prospero, the Duke of Milan, was a learned and studious man, who lived among his books, leaving his dukedom to his brother Antonio, in whom he had trust. But Antonio wanted to wear the duke's crown himself. With the help of Alonso, King of Naples, he managed to get into his hands the dukedom with all its power and riches and they took Prospero to sea and forced him into a little boat with no mast. In their cruelty they put his little daughter, Miranda into the boat with him. But one courtiers Gonzalo was true to Prospero. He secretly placed in the boat some fresh water, provisions and Prospero’s precious books. The boat was cast on an island, and they landed in safety. This island was under the spell and the spirit Ariel was still remained in prison. Prospero was a great magician. When Miranda was grown up, she was so sweet and fair to see. Prospero, knowing they were there, so he raised by his art a great storm, and Prince Ferdinand leaped into the sea. But Ariel brought him safe ashore; and all the rest of the crew was landed unhurt. While the tempest was raging, Prospero showed his daughter and told her that it was filled with human beings like themselves. She, in pity of their lives, then Prospero told her the story of his life. Ariel had work for Prospero. Ariel led the spell-bound prince into the presence of Prospero and Miranda.
