Take a magnesium ribbon. burn this magnesium ribbon in air. collect the ash dissolve the ash in water then dip a red litmus paper in the solution. The  red litmus turns into blue color. this indicates the solution is basic nature. In the above experiment Magnesium is a metal. after burning in air it forms MgO (ash).Magnesium oxides on dissolving in water forms a basic solution called magnesium hydroxide. 2Mg+O2 →2MgO +2H2O →2Mg(OH)2 Non metallic oxides are acidic nature. Dissolve sulphur dioxide gas in water. test this solution with blue litmus. the litmus changes into red color.
