because if a=b then (a-b)/(a-b) is not equal to 1.

You are basically multiplying the top and bottom by zero at some point and cancelling the zeros out... this is not valid; if this were the case, you could claim any fraction is equal to 0/0 which makes no sense, so it really isn't defined
