Method - 1

We know that, 0 = 0

  or, 1 - 1 = 0 - 0

  or, 1 (1 - 1) = 0.1 - 0.1

  or, 1 (1 - 1) = 0 (1 - 1)

  or, 1 = 0 , by cancelling (1 - 1) from both sides.

This is incorrect because we have divided both the sides by (1 - 1), i.e., by 0 and this results to an undefined result.

Method - 2

Let us take a = b

Multiplying both sides by a, we get

  a² = ab

  or, a² - b² = ab - b²

  or, (a + b) (a - b) = b (a - b)

  or, a + b = b , by cancelling (a - b)

  or, a + a = a , since a = b

  or, 2a = a

  or, 2 = 1

  or, 2 - 1 = 0

  or, 1 = 0

This result is also incorrect as we have divided both sides by (a - b) and being a = b, both sides got divided by 0 giving an undefined result.
