let us assume that 3a is rational and is of form p/q  (where q is not = 0)
p and q are co-prime.
so,3a=p/q
       a=p/3q
we know that a is irrational as it is given in the question.
this contradicts our assumption
therefore , 3a is irrational
hence proved.
