let us assume that√3 is rational.

√3=p/q, where p and q are co prime

squaring both sides

3=p^2/q^2

3q^2=p^2

q^2=p^2/3------(i)

=>p^2 is divisible by 3

=>p is divisible by 3

p=3c

q^2=(3c) ^2/3

9c^2/3

q^2=3c^2

c=q^2/3

=>q^2 is divisible by 3

=>q is divisible by 3

=>p and q have a common factor

this contradicts our assumption.

therefore, √3 is irrational.
