Hot air rises because when you heat air (or any other gas for that matter), it expands. When the air expands, it becomes less dense than the air around it. The less dense hot air then floats in the more dense cold air much like wood floats on water because wood is less dense than water.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀:-
- Take two empty paper cups of the same size and hang them in an inverted position on the two ends of a stick .
- Tie a piece of thread in the middle of the stick and hang them in an that the cups are in balanced position .
- Now put a buring candle just below one of the hanging cups and observe the change .
:-
We will observe that the balancing of the two cups is disturbed . The cup under which the candle is lit moves up .
The lighted candle warms the surroundings air . As a result , the air becomes light and rises and pushes the paper cup up .
:-
On heating air expands and occupies space . The warm air , therefore , is higher , is lighter than the cold air and rises .
