For convenience, let the the original number be 2a

Therefore, (2a)^{3} = 8a^{3}

if the number becomes half

= 2a/2 = a

so cube of the new number is a^{3}

clearly a^{3} = 8a^{3}/8

so the cube of the resulting number is one eighth of the the cube of original number.
