Here, the mass of oxygen in 1 molecule of water = (18 - 2)amu = 16 amu which is atomic mass of oxygen. This means 1 molecule of water contains 1 atom of oxygen coming from 12 molecule of oxygen. Hence, oxygen is diatomic.
