Aim :

  • To prove that sunlight is necessary for photosynthesis.

Apparatus :

  1. Potted plant
  2. Light green
  3. Iodine solution
  4. Petridish
  5. Black paper

Procedure :

  • Take a potted plant and destarch it by keeping it in dark of 3-4 days.
  • Cover one of its leaf with on which a design out of on both side of leaf.
  • Fix the paper on the leaf in such a manner that light doesnot enter the dark part.
  • Place this plant in sunlight for few hours.
  • After few hours of exposure to bring bright sunlight, test leaf which is covered by dark black paper for the presence of starch.

Observation :

  • It will be observed that only the part of the leaf, which could get sunlight through the cut out design, turns bluish black colour showing the presence of starch.

Result :

  • The experiment proves that light is necessary for photosynthesis.

Precautions :

  • Place the black paper properly.
