please see the attachment.

Let ABC be a triangle AD be one  of its medians.

An be the height of triangle ABC.

ar (ABD) =1/2(BC x AN)

= 1/2(CD x AN)            sinceAD ibisect BC so BD = CD

               =ar (ACD)

If ar (ABC) = 30 cm^2

ar(ABD) = 30/2 =15cm^2
