let √5 be rational

5=a^2/b^2

5b^2=a^2

therefore a is divisible by 5

now,

a=5c

therefore

25c^2=5b^2

b^2=5c^2

therefore b is also divisible by 5

this contradicts our assumption

thus √5 is an irrational no.
