• His participation in a bid to purchase a work of art at Sotheby's Auction House is indicative of his passion for the arts. The murmurings that always precede the sale of a masterpiece were brought on by Lot 103.
• The story's main lesson is to never judge a book by its cover. Sir Alexander Heathcote takes great satisfaction in his understanding of art, but in the end he is duped into thinking the Chinese statue is real when it was just the base, which is invaluable. Despite having the appearance of being a genuine work of art from the Ming period, the Chinese Statue was actually a copy of the original.
