negative effects of friction:-

1. Friction wears out the soles of shoes. It wears out the tyres of all kinds of vehicles.

2. Friction wears out the moving parts of machinery. It also heats up the moving parts and they need replacement from time to time.

Methods of Reducing friction:-

1. Polishing a rough surface smoothens irregularities on it. The smooth surface in turn offers very less friction.

2. By oiling or greasing the moving parts of machinery the friction can be considerably reduced. If the moving parts are light in weight than light oil is used as lubricant.

3. Friction can be reduced by providing wheels. If wheels are provided a very small amount of force is required to move because force of friction decreases.

4. Ball bearings consists of small Steel ball. When these Steel balls are placed between two cylindrical moving services they reduce friction considerably.

5. When an object is shaped in such a way that it experiences minimum friction in air or water the shape of the object is said to be streamlined. The streamlined shape offers minimum force of friction in air or water and hence helps the fish or birds to move faster.

Negative effects of friction include:

  • Wear and tear happens as a result of friction.
  • It is due to friction that moving objects can slow down as it opposes them.
  • It is due to friction, then energy is lost as heat.

How friction can be reduced?

  • Polishing a surface makes the surface smoother hence friction is less likely to act on such a surface.
  • For objects that need to be moved in water, such as a boat, there bodies are made streamlined so that friction can be reduced.
  • In between surfaces lubricants such as grease and oil are effective in reducing friction.
