Prutha Desai might be young but towers over many in spirit. 12-
years-old Prutha was trapped under the debris of a four-storey building
in Ahmedabad during the earthquake in January 2001 for almost 34)
hours. She could come out only when an underground tunnel was dug,
with the help of the Army. Her right hand was stuck between a car and
a concrete slab and had to be cut from the shoulder to get her out of
the debris.
Prutha realised her loss only in the hospital. “On the third day ... I
tried to get up and wanted to put my hand on the bed to support myself.
But I could not. I cried a lot."
Having lost her right hand, it was difficult even to imagine using her
left hand to write and draw. "Initially I would get frustrated as my left
hand was not stable and I could not draw properly," she said. But her
family supported her all through. "The day I managed to wear my socks
on my own, I felt as if I had conquered the world."
