Answer:

A pteridophyte is a vascular plant (with xylem and phloem) that disperses spores. Because pteridophytes produce neither flowers nor seeds, they are sometimes referred to as "cryptogams", meaning that their means of reproduction is hidden.

Pteridophytes are also known as vascular cryptogams because

  • Amongst all the cryptogams Pteridophytes are the first plants to have vascular tissues namely Xylem and Phloem.
  • It's only because of this feature of Pteridophytes why their spore dispersal is really easy and they can be found in large amounts. Since they don't have seeds and flowers and only have vascular tissues like Xylem and Phloem in them, they are referred as vascular cryptogams.
  • They are also called as lower vascular plants.
