Active voice - A transitive verb can be used in two different forms and these two forms of the verb are called the active voice.

How to use - In active voice, the subject of the verb is active it is directly responsible for the action indicated by the verb. In this form, the subject acts or does something which affect the object. The action of the subject passes on to the object.

Examples -

❺ Columbus discovered America

In the above sentences the subject is door of an action and the action produces some affect and brings some changes in the object. It is in this sense that the verb is active. It is done in active voice.

Passive voice - In this voice the Subject is not the active agent of the action indicated by the verb.

How to use - The object governs the verb and the subject doesn't act but us ut acted upon. Thus in passive voice the subject is pushed into the background.

Examples -

❶ I am hated by him.

❷ Our country is loved by us.

❸ A letter is being written by me.

❹ A snake was killed by Ram.

❺ America was discovered by Columbus.

The above sentences will show that the Subject of the action is no longer active. Is has been pushed into the background. It is passive voice.
