A person has to pay for the sins that he has done. In ' The Rime of the ancient Mariner', the mariner killed the albatross, which is considered a symbol of purity. Since Mariner had done this sin, he had to bear the consequences in the sea. He suffered in the sea and also after reaching land as his vision was stuck at the sight of dead crew. Had he not killed albatross, his ride would be good and safe. So, punishment caught him up.

The mariner killed the albatross and as a result he always felt guilty even when he reached land.

The sight of his crew dying haunted him and he was guilt ridden.

The ship too stayed where it was without moving an inch.

Had the mariner not killed the albatross, his crew would be alive and the ship too would be moving towards a destination.
