Punjab, a state in India that was famous for its food production, as its main economic activity is agriculture,has had a negative turn around to be known as the source of many diseases.Punjab has had its name converted from the food basket of India to the disease basket.Reasons for this, is because while the citizens of Punjab were heavily investing on its green revolution, they went overboard and used large amounts of fertilizers and pesticides to achieve this.The excess of this chemicals in the environment has led to water, soil and air pollution. The pollution has led to an increase in disease levels in the the state of Punjab; including cancer and neurological defects.As the circulation of these chemicals increase in the environment, the levels of disease contraction also increase and this is why Punjab has become known as a disease basket.
