Hydration energy is inversely proportional to the size.

Size of Li is smaller than the Na so hydration energy of lithium is greater than that of sodium.

So LiCl is hydrated while NaCl is not.

Answer:

Pure Lithium Chloride is hydrated but pure Sodium Chloride is always anhydrous because the hydration energy of Lithium Chloride is higher than that of Sodium Chloride.

Explanation:

  • The hydration energy of LiCl is more than that of NaCl .
  • Hydration energy can be defined as the energy released when one mole of ions undergo hydration.
  • More is the hydration energy, easier will be the hydration and the hydrated molecule will be more stable.
  • Hydration energy directly proportional to the size of the ion.
  • Less is the size, more is the hydration energy .
  • Size of Lithium ion is smaller than that of Sodium. So its hydration energy is more .
  • As the hydration energy of LiCl is more, it is easily get hydrated.
  • But Sodium ion is big in size .So it's hydration energy is less. So its hydrated molecule is unstable.
  • So Pure Sodium Chloride is always anhydrous.
