A carat is a unit of weight for diamonds and other gemstones. One carat equals 200 milligrams (0.200 grams). ... A karat, when used with gold, is a unit of purity-- 24-karat gold is pure gold.

let us take an example.
u have 23 carat gold whose weight is 240gm.
and this means in the total amount of gold u have have impurities of one part and 23 parts of gold.
means it has 230 of pure gold and 10 gm of impurities like copper etc.
hope u understand what is carat.
and in 22 carat gold there are 2 parts of impurities.
and copper is added to it for strength as pure gold is very malleable and ductile.
