In Gooseberries, Ivan recounts how his brother Nicolai had a dream of owning an estate where he could grow gooseberries. However, he was overwhelmed in his ambition; he married a rich widow whom he did not love to raise the funds for the land, and he even starved his wife to death trying to save. In the end, the gooseberries he grew were bitter. The story highlights the important of fighting for the greater good instead of one's own happiness and how being overly ambition in chasing your dreams would leave you unsatisfied even while chasing happiness the entire time.
