Meaning:
The reported speech means conversion of speech from either direct to indirect, or indirect to direct. Now, let us look at some examples.
EXAMPLES OF REPORTED SPEECH
DIRECT SPEECH:
He said, "I got to market."
INDIRECT SPEECH:
He said that he goes to market.
Similarly, we can change a number of sentences from direct to indirect or vice versa.
Let us look at the rules of conversion now.
RULES OF CONCERSION
Change from Direct to Indirect:
- Remove comma and inverted commas.
- Put "that" between the reporting and reported speeches.(it is optional to put "that" between the reporting and reported speech)
- Change the 1st letter of reported speech into small letter except for "I"
- Change the pronoun of the direct speech according to the rules.
- Change the tense of the direct speech appropriately according to rules.
