Olfactory nerves are responsible for smell and  partial responsible for taste too.

Explanation:

  • Olfactory nerves are cranial nerve I there origin are olfactory bulb or lobe its function is to sense smell but the cilia of nerves react to specific chemicals and send electrical signals through axons of olfactory nerve to our brain.
  • The sense of smell inhances our sense of taste but our sense of taste is not totally depended on the olfactory nerves it depends on glassopharyngeal IX whose origin is in side of medulla .
  • So when we taste our lunch or sugar after blocking our nose we find that our sense of taste do not completely gone but decreases.
