Hey.. here is ur ans.
it was a very difficult situation for Nicola as it was the time to choose wether he speaks truth or lie....he wanted to keep his and jacopos profession a secret so he said that he had to do just something with that money....hope it help:)

DivyeNarang: if he took some time then narrator would doubt him....so he suddenly answered that he had some plans.....if they told him that they had to get money to treat their sis. then narrator would know about them and their past and would not treat as he treated and because he didn't want to reveal their secret that's the only reason they are the 2 gentlemen of Verona....

Heya friend !!

Let's assume I am Nicola . When the narrator questioned me how I spend the money I earned everyday , I feel perplexed and hesitate to answer a question asked by a mere stranger . The way I and jacopo spend our money is a very confidential matter and we do not enjoy being asked about such personal matters . We do not want people to poke their noses in our business because we prefer to keep our "little secret ". Initially when the narrator suddenly threw such a question at me ,I felt quite uneasy and embarrassed to face him . Unlike many fortunate people ,I do not lead a luxurious life . We use our entire hard-earned money on our dear sister's treatment and somehow thrive on rotten and stale breads ...We don't seek undue favours from anyone ,neither do we want to be subjects of others' pities . We never grumble about our work conditions and are contented with whatever we get . Also we never resort to illegal activities and our honest with our work .
We have our own self - dignity and pride and the narrator's question makes me flush red in embarrassment .
