Ashoka adopted several measures to spread his dhamma. Some of them are: (i) He himself set an example before his people by strictly following Ahimsa. (ii) He appointed some; officers known as Dharam Mahamatras to spread and explain the message of dhamma. {iii) He engraved the principles of dhamma on rocks and pillars.

Measures for propagating dhamma by ashoka are -

  1. For purpose of permanently recording doctrines of dhamma ,Ashoka inscribed them on rocks and pillars.
  2. He appointed a special class of officer called dhamma-mahamatras for propagating dhamma and for promoting it's practice throughout the kingdom.
  3. He sent envoys as well as his son, Mahendra and daughter, Sanghamitra, to propagate Buddhism in Ceylon (Srilanka) and in western countries.
