*Puzzle*
Three friends used to visit a bar everyday to have beer. They used to buy three beers for rs. 300/-. The routine was well known to the bartender. One evening, bartender had to be away and so he got someone known to him as bar-in-charge. The three friends as usual, visited the bar, bought three beers by paying 300 rupees. That day, the cost of the beer had gone down to Rs.250/- for three beers, which was not known to the bar-in-charge.

The bartender returned and inquired with the bar-in-charge, if the three friends had visited and how much they paid. Learning that they had paid excess, he got his errand boy to return the excess money – Rs. 50/-, to the three friends.

The errand boy, gets to the three friends, but gets confused to distribute the Rs.50/- to three people. So, he hands over Rs.10/- to each one, and pockets the rest Rs.20/-

So now the summary - the three friends ended up paying Rs.90/- each – i.e. Rs. 2

70/-. The errand boy keeps Rs.20/-. The total is Rs. 290/-. Where is the balance Rs. 10/-?

PUZZLE QUESTION

The confusion arises at the summary:

  • They paid Rs. 300 in total, i.e., Rs. 100 each.
  • New price of beer = Rs. 250 .
  • Excess = Rs. 50 .
  • Returned = Rs. (10 * 3) = Rs. 30
  • Errand boy took = Rs. 20
  • Total amount = Rs. (250 + 30 + 20) = Rs. 300

While summarizing, the amount Rs. 90 is allotted to each friend to their knowledge only, but not to the reality of beer's cost Rs. 250.

Answer: Rs. 10 is including in the cost of the beer itself.
