Explain Pythagoras Theorem with Formula and example.
What is Pythagoras Theorem?
• Pythagoras theorem is a proof that the sum of the squares of the base and perpendicular of a right angled triangle is equal to the square of its hypotenuse. Pythagoras theorem was given by a Greek mathematician Pythagoras who first realised this property of a right angled triangle.
• The Pythagoras theorem was also studied by an Indian mathematician Baudhya and is sometimes also referred to as the Baudhayan Theorem.
Formula for Pythagoras theorem :-
The formula for Pythagoras theorem is given by :-
✒ (H)² = (B)² + (P)²
where,
→ H = Hypotenuse
→ B = Base
→ P = Perpendicular
Verification :-
Assume the attached triangle :-
let's take:-
• Perpendicular = 4 units
• Base = 3 units
Hence, applying the formula :-
✒ H² = B² + P²
✒ H² = (3)² + (4)²
✒ H² = 9+16
✒ H² = 25
✒ H = √25
∴ H = 5 units, which is true.
