Pyruvate + NAD + Coenzyme A (CoA) ⇒ Acetyl CoA + NADH + CO2
This is a oxidative decarboxylation which cannot be reversed or in other words Acetyl CoA cannot be converted into pyruvate again unlike lot of reaction in glycolysis which can be reversed.
