Answer:
(i) The pyruvate is oxidized to form acetyl CoA which enters the Krebs cycle of mitochondria.
(ii) Krebs cycle refers to the set of biochemical reactions by which most of the living cells generate energy by oxidizing food in presence of oxygen. It takes place in the mitochondrial matrix. It consumes oxygen and produces water, NADH, GTP, and carbon dioxide (waste product).
(iii) The Krebs cycle produces one molecule of ATP, one molecule of FADH₂, and 3 molecules of NADH in one cycle.
(iv) The next phase is oxidative phosphorylation (electron transport chain and chemiosmosis) during which NADH and FADH₂ transfer their electrons to oxygen via electron carriers. It results in the build-up of proton gradient the energy of which is used by ATP synthase to convert ADP into ATP.
