(hypotenuse)² = (base)² +(height)²

given:

base = 12

height = 5

(hypotenuse)² = (12)²+(5)²

= (12×12)+(5×5)

= 144+25

= 169

factors of 169 - 1 and 13

169 = 13×13

(hypotenuse)² = 13×13

taking square root on both sides

√(hypotenuse)² = √(13×13)

hypotenuse = 13.
