Answer:
Chromatography is a technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.
Chromatography is the process of separation of different components of a mixture based upon their different possibilities in any particular solution or solvent.
This separation is based on the idea that different constituents in a mixture get absorbed differently like they take more time or less time. This is the rate of their solubility. This depends upon the:
- The relative solubility of these constituents.
- The relative affinity of the constituents for the absorbent medium( I have described later). The absorbent material is magnesium oxide(MgO) or alumina(a aluminium compound), filter paper etc.
The chromatography was taken from Greeks, where kroma means colour. The simplest chromatography is the paper chromatography.

✦Aim:
To separate components of ink through chromatography.
✦Materials required:
Filter paper, ink, pen/pencil, glass beaker, water.
✦Method:
Take a glass beaker with 1/4 th full water. Then, take a thin strip of filter paper and draw a line on it, 2 cm/3 cm above the base. Now put a drop of ink on this line and let it dry for some time. Now put the filter paper in the water containing beaker just where the line was made and ink drop was put. Now observe that how water rises up.
✦Observation:
As the water rises on the filter paper, the water takes along the components of ink that are different dyes. Since, ink is made up of many dyes, the dye which is most soluble rises the highest and the one which is less soluble rise slower and form layers in lower height. Due to different solubilities, they rise to different heights. This paper with coloured layers or dots is known as .
✦Conclusion:
Separation of components occurred due to different solubilities, hence this method is mostly used in separating dyes like natural colours from pigments, drugs from blood etc.
