Answers
A.
Soil is a material composed of five ingredients — minerals, soilorganic matter, living organisms, gas, and water. Soil minerals are divided into three size classes — clay, silt, and sand (Figure 1); the percentages of particles in these size classes is calledsoil texture. The mineralogy of soils is diverse.
B.soil science, humus denominates the fraction of soil organic matter that is amorphous and without the "cellular cake structure characteristic of plants, micro-organisms or animals". Humus significantly affects the bulk density of soil and contributes to its retention of moisture and nutrients

HUMUS
In soil science, humus denominates the fraction of soil organic matter that is amorphous and without the "cellular cake structure characteristic of plants, micro-organisms or animals". Humus significantly affects the bulk density of soil and contributes to its retention of moisture and nutrients.

The larger the surface area the easier it is for the soil to hold onto water so it has a higher water holding capacity. Sand in contrast has large particle sizes which results in smaller surface area. The water holding capacity for sand is low.
Loam soils are best for plant growth because sand, silt, and clay together provide desirable characteristics. First, the different-sized particles leave spaces in the soil for air and water to flow and roots to penetrate.

What is meant by weathering
Weathering describes the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on the surface of the Earth. Water, ice, acids, salts, plants, animals, and changes in temperature are all agents of weathering

What does pH scale measure
pH is a measure of how acidic/basic water is. The range goes from 0 - 14, with 7 being neutral. pHs of less than 7 indicate acidity, whereas a pH of greater than 7 indicates a base. pH is really a measure of the relative amount of free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in the water

What does soil provide to the plants?
Plants feed soil organisms that in return provide nutrients to the plants. Microbes break down existing organic matter or mineral soil, making nutrients more available to the plant.
