Answer:

Strong points and weaknesses of the Hero in The Emperor Jones :

  • Jones is a tragic hero, even if he's not particularly heroic. He is a man who can flee an uncomfortable homeland and rise to power abroad. However, his tragic flaw is his extreme greed and  pride, which ends up undermining him.
  • He sees nothing wrong with his actions and feels ruthless for taking on the role of emperor and stealing large sums of money from the islanders, which he keeps in an offshore bank account.
  • As he escapes, he begins to doubt, but never fully faces his own  remorse, choosing instead to muster a sense of pride. It is his greed and  pride that makes him lose his head and fall prey to his pursuers. He never really regrets his misdeeds, which ultimately cost him his life.
  • The Emperor Jones was also the first American play to offer a racially integrated cast to a Broadway audience and featured a black actor in its title role.
