The concept of “indian” cannot be attributed to our “ancient ancestors” so it's safe to put as ancient ancestors since our ancestors did not draw boundaries as their philosophy was “ krunvantu vishvam Aryam” meaning let this entire universe become Aryans and this is based on Vedic ideology.
Aryans were Peace loving people who were in search of universal God or power and they didn't believe in God unlike other religionists. They self regulated themselves with civic sense like residential layouts close to flowing rivers beds as they were highly civilized however, mahayogi Shri Aurobindo even refused to accept the word “Civilized” in this context and further they administered provincial type of governance.
