Q.1 Give reasons for the following:
1. NH3 gas a covalent compound does not conduct electricity but its aq. soln. NH4OH is a weak electrolyte
2. MgCl, is soluble in water but insoluble in acetone, while methane is insoluble in water, but soluble in acetone
3. Iron displaces copper from a solution of a copper salt. The reaction is deemed as a redox reaction
4. A non-metallic atom [at. no. 9] forms a molecule of the same, containing a single covalent bond.
5. In the formation of MgO the magnesium atom [at. no. 12] loses two electrons from its valence shell

Explanation:
1)NH3 doesn't have any free mobile ions. NH4OH is a weak electrolyte because it ionises to it's ions (hydroxide ion and ammonium ion) but it ionises upto a small extent
2)MgCl is inorganic, Methane is organic. Organic solutions don't dissolve in inorganic solvents and inorganic solutions don't dissolve in organic solvents.
3)Fe is oxidised because it loses electrons, Cu is reduced because it gains electrons.
4)In order to attain stability
5)Because it needs to lose two electrons to attain stability. Oxygen takes those two electrons and the compound becomes stable.
