Answer:

a)Increases

b)Decreases

Explanation:

a) As we move down a group, the atomic size increases as new shell are being added simultaneously. So, due to the addition of new shells, the nuclear attraction decreases that cannot pull the outermost electrons strongly towards it.

b) As we move across a period, the atomic size decreases . Because when we move across a period, we observe that an electron is added to the outermost shell simultaneously. But NEW SHELLS are not added here. So, if the no. of electron increases, the no. of proton also increases that mix in the nucleus of the atom. As the nucleus grows dense and heavier simultaneously, it results in increasing the nuclear attraction for the outermost electrons towards it. So the atomic radius decreases. Thus the atomic size decreases.
