Q.1 Read the passage and answer the following questions:-
Do monkey's make nests? Strange as it may seem, one species of monkeys coes! The orangutans are the
only mamnals that make nests. They construct a sleeping platform on trees using branches and live on
then. Do you want to know more about these wonderful apes?
The orangutans are large apes with long arms and orange hair. They used to live in large numbers in the
jungles of mainland Southeast Asia. But today these man-like apes are restricted to lowland swamp forest
in Borneo and parts of Sumatra. Their numbers have come cown sharply as a result of being hunted by
planters who want to protect their palm plantations, and the destruction of the rainforests of umber and
agriculture Many orangutans also died in the forest fines in Indonesia a few years ago. As a result, the
orangutan is listed today in the WWF Red Book as an endangered animal.
What are the efforts being taken to protect these animals? To ensure that their numbers in the wild do not
fall shapely, Wildlife Departments have set up conservation centres in different countries. One such centre
is in Sepilck in the north-easten region of Malaysia. It was set up in 1964 as a rescue centre where
orangutans are helped to lead a normal and useful life again. Here they are trained so that they can look
after themselves in the wild A famous centre, Sepilok is spread over 13 square kilometers of forest Here
you can see your orangutan, hanging on rupes, Jimbing trees, ſeeding un fruiling, indulging playful ticks
and even coming close to visitors!
What happens to a young orangutan anarrival at Sepilok? Its routine begins with a medical check. Then it
is kept in isolation for 90 days under the care of a human foster mother. The foster mother looks after it
just like a mother looks after a human baby. Soon the young orangutan begins to identify the person
taking care of it and a close bond develops between them. At this stage, the orangutan depends on its
faster mother for everything It cannot climb properly, find food or build nests-skills, which are essential
to survive in the wild. However, the foster mother gives the young orangutans 'pre-school training,
during which il auquines diese skills,
Over a period of time, the orangutan moves on to the 'outward-bound school and starts enjoying more
freedom in the jungle. Food supply is reduced as the animal grows and the orangutan is now forced to
find its own food This is the moment of truth.
The orangutan can move out of the foster home and survive in the jungle on its own.
