(10)

1. Rice is a food which contains carbohydrates. Carbohydrates give us energy. Rice is as

important a part of the Asian diet as potatoes and wheat are for people in western countries.

However rice alone does not give us enough nourishment for we need fats, proteins and nutrients

for good health. For this reason, we eat rice with meat, fish and vegetables.

2. The rice plant originated in eastern countries such as India and Myanmar. Its cultivation then

spread to Southern Europe. In the East, having a good rice crop is important, since rice is the

main food source. Long ago Chinese emperors even had a special ceremony for the planting of

rice to ensure a good harvest. In Japan, there is a special god called Inari who is the rice bearer.

Farmers pray to him at shrines all over Japan for good harvest every year.

3. The rice plant needs a high temperature and lots of water. It is usually planted on flat land near

rivers or canals. Generally, the seeds are sown in a nursery first. When they have grown into

seedling, they are transplanted to the rice fields. Rice can also be grown on hillsides.

4. When the plant is ripe, it is cut, and the grain is separated from the stalks of the plant. This is

called, “threshing”. The threshed rice is then cleaned of dirt and leaves. The grain must be dried

before it is taken to the mill, where the rice is separated from the husk and bran inside the grain.

We are then left with white, polished rice.

5. Rice can be ground into flour to make noodles. Chinese cakes and starch. Even the husk has

its uses. Villagers use it as fuel, while factories use it to make light bricks and boxes for packing
