The earliest text , Rigveda, has many things in common with the Iranian Zenda Avesta and is
written in verse . It is the earliest specimen of the Indo-European language divided into 10
cycles for mandalas, 1028 hymns . The Rig Vedic hymns are in the words of Rabindranath
Tagore, "a poetic testament of a people's collective reaction to the wonder and awe of existence.
They are poems of praise to the beauty of the earth and nature and its power. As the Aryans
settled down and ritualistic religion developed, the need was felt for a hymn which could be
sung and set to tune. Thus arose a 2nd compilation, the Sama Veda which means song or
