Answers
Answer:
In the story "the last leaf" there are two friends Sue and Johnsy one of whom Johnsy was suffering from pneumonia as well as thinks that she would die when the last leaf of the ivy creepers outside the window will fall believing in an impossible superstition as she had no hope left to live and thus was willing to leave life , but when in the stormy night the last leaf fall her neighbour Behrman painted a masterpiece which almost look like leaf and when Johnsy saw the leaf still clung to the plant even after strong windy storms she got a new hope to live and believe that willing to die is a curse in itself this way the story justifies hope and fighting with odds
I agree with the statement that ‘The Last Leaf’ is a story of hope and fighting the odds, in at least two ways.
- First, Johnsy saw the painted leaf and got the hope she needed to fight pneumonia.
- Secondly, Behrman hoped that Johnsy would feel better after seeing the leaf on the wall, and fought all odds, like the wind, rain and cold weather to paint the leaf.
Explanation of the listed points:
- Johnsy had pneumonia and her condition was steadily deteriorating, not only because of the illness, but more so because she had given up hope of surviving. As the doctor told Sue, Johnsy had ‘made up her mind’ not to get better. It was more of a will power issue than anything else. The odds of her survival were very low.
- Sue was very concerned about her friend and shared her thoughts with Behrman. Behrman had the courage to brave the bad weather and risked his own life to paint an ivy leaf for Johnsy to see. When Johnsy saw that the leaf had survived the storm, she felt that it was a sign that she would survive as well. That one leaf built hope in her heart and she began to look forward to getting better. The hope increased the odds of her survival just as Behrman had planned.
