Hi,

Here is your answer

The portrait of a lady is a story written by the Indian author Khushwant Singh which desribes the author's relationship with his grandmother in his differet stages of life.

The narrator used to be very close to his grandmother during his stay in the village with her. The granndmother used to accompany him to his school and take care of his all needs. Later, when they were called to the city, their whole relationship changed.

The grandmother no longer accompanied the author to a school as he used to go by a motor bus. She also could not help him with his studies as he no longer learnt religious scriptures. The grandmother was upset to hear that his school taught only science and maths and no religious teachings. She disapproved of him learning music which she considered lewd and befitting beggars and harlots.

The grandmother used to sit at her spinning wheel all day reciting prayers and used to feed the sparrows in the afternoon. She rarely spoke to the author and despite the physical separation, their bond of friendship was still strong.

When the author started to go to university, he was given a separate room of his ow and they rarely saw each other. The grandmother would spend her days telling the beads of her rosary and did not speak to anyone.

Even though they spend less and less time with each other, their love remained strong.

Hope this helps you.
