Most Professors get a lot of mails. Some are distracted and may not answer mails quickly. Here are some things that I found help full in writing to Professors.
Keep the mail shorter than a printed page.
Do your research on the professor, such as his Publications and specialties
Write one or two sentences about yourself, why this topic interests you.
Mention topics that interest the professor because they relate to the reseach
Clearly and briefly state what you wish to learn, or how you hope he can help you.
Possibly end with an open question such as “can you give me additional tips for starting my research” or “can you advise me some articles or books to help me learn more about my topic”
