kmno4

KMnO

4

dissociates as K

+

and MnO

4

. Thus we will now calculate the oxidation number of Mn

k2 cr2o7

Oxidation state of K:- +1

Oxidation state of O:- -2

Let the oxidation state of Cr be :- x

And we know that net charge on a compound is 0. Therefore the equation will be :-

(1×2)+(2×x)+[7×(-2)]=0

2+2x-14=0

2x-12=0

2x=12

Therefore, x=12/2=6

So in K2Cr2O7 , the oxidation number of Cr is +6.

h3po4

Only an element, not a compound, can be assigned an oxidation number.

The oxidation numbers of the elements in H3PO4 are:

H +1 P +5 O -2

The compound's systematic name is phosphoric(V) acid, to reflect the oxidation number of the phosphorus.
