Given :  Jammu and Kerala Express, both trains, start from Katra to go to Ujjain.

Jammu Express crosses a stopped car in 7 seconds.

Even though both the trains are of same length, the Kerala Express crosses the same stopped car in 8 seconds.

To Find : What time is needed for them to cross each other

Solution:

Let say length of car  =  x  m

length of train  =   t m

Jammu expresses crossed in  7 secs  = x +  t  m

speed = (x + t)/7

Kerala express crossed  in 8 secs  =  x + t  m

Speed = (x + t)/8

As both are going in same direction =>

Relative speed =  (x + t)/7 -  (x + t)/8   = (x + t)/56

Distance to be covered  =   2t m

 2t/(x + t)/56

= 112t/(x + t)

ignoring car length in comparison to train

= 112  secs
