"The Eyes Are Not There" is a beautiful and entertaining short story written by Ruskin Bond. The writer tells the story in the jaw first person.

The narrator is a blind young man. He is going to Dehra. A young girl boarded a train alone. The writer carefully observes the precautions his parents give him. The narrator gradually gets to know the girl and asks where she is going. She tells him that she will get off at Shahrampur, only 2 hours left. The writer took every precaution and concealed that he was blind. He complimented the girl saying she has an interesting face. She was amused by such a comment because everyone else said that she had a pretty face. The writer was attracted by her gentle voice and the smell of her fragrant hair.

When the girl was about to come down, he wanted to touch her hair. But his modesty deterred him. After she got off the bus, another passenger entered the compartment. The narrator asks the novice if the girl's hair is long or short. The new passenger replied that he only paid attention to his eyes, not his hair. He added that she had beautiful eyes, but they were of no use. This means that the girl is also blind. With this poignantly moving turn, the story comes to an end.
