Given:

I walk a certain distance and ride back and take 6.5 hours altogether.

I could walk both ways for the same distance in 7.75 hours

To find:

How long would it take me  to ride both ways for the same distance?

Solution:

Let's assume,

"x" → distance covered by walking

"y" → distance covered by riding

So, the equation representing when I am walking a certain distance and riding the same distance back it takes 6.5 hrs, is as follows:

x + y = 6.5 ..... (i)

Similarly, the equation representing when I am walking both ways for the same distance in 7.75 hrs, is as follows:

x + x = 7.75

⇒ 2x = 7.75

x = 3.875 ..... (ii)

On substituting the value of x from (ii) in (i), we get

3.875 + y = 6.5

⇒ y = 6.5 - 3.875

y = 2.625 ..... (iii)

Now,

If I ride both the ways for the same distance then the eq, will be,

= 2y

on substituting from (iii), we get

= 2 × 2.625

= 5.25 hrs

since 1 hr = 60 minutes

= 5 hrs + (0.25 × 60) minutes

= 5 hrs + 15 minutes

= 5 hrs 15 minutes

Thus, it would take me  → option (4)5 hours 15 minutes to ride both ways for the same distance.
